Last Victrola of the year! And it comes during something of a crisis point at KOPN. The board in the air room fried itself! Seems really odd. Why now? What is going to happen at KOPN? Will programmers be able to adapt to the old equipment in the production room? That mixing board is at least 30 years old and has pretty much zero "cue" capabilities (so we can't preview our plays before airing them, makes things feel very much "without a net"), and we are limited to one turntable, one cd player (at least on the night I was there) and no internet. But I think that this was a great show to round out the year, and the new challenges have sort of re-invigorated my own programming. Or if not my programming, at least, it has made being at the station a little more interesting, I guess. Challenges are fun!

November Second post Halloween folk rock mellow

I made a red over yellow genre mix for last month's mix tape exchange (it's a group that convenes on the last tuesday of each month at kopn to exchange mix tapes/cds). Red over yellow is the colored tape identifier of a certain folk genre at KOPN. I can't remember what they call it, but I call it folk-rock. So this show was sort of inspired by that tape, although I tried to avoid some of the artists who marked that particular mix (Fairport Convention and the various solo projects of its members, mostly) just for variety's sake. I'm feeling Charalambides lately, if that wasn't obvious. The winter approaches.

Olivia Wyatt was in studio during a portion of this program. The service that I've been using to provide streaming and download-able audio is going to stop offering that for free. Drop.io was bought by Facebook! The updates to the programmer's archive have become fewer and further between, too. I am going to look into alternative platforms for offering files of my radio show. You can always hear it wednesday night from ten to midnight on kopn and at Maude Vintage. Thanks for tuning in.

I lived in Grayslake until I was about five years old, so getting a chance to get back there is pretty nice. I missed the Cave show at Mojos in Columbia, but that's okay, I'll see them next weekend at the Pitchfork festival in front of the biggest crowd they've ever played to. So, that is exciting. Things are kind of slow in the office. I am listening to Teenage Fanclub's first album, A Catholic Education, right now. I borrowed the first Dwight Twilley Band record, Sincerely, from Jeremy last night, it rules. Really need a copy of Twilley Don't Mind, so don't hesitate to contact me if you've got one laying around. Been listening to a lot of Springsteen, Flaming Groovies, Raspberries, and Big Star. "What does this all amount to?" you may be asking yourself. Well, it looks like there will be no shortage of power pop sounds on the Victrola this week, is all. But there will probably be some other sounds in there as well. Like, JJ Cale's Naturally has been hitting the spot this week. Hadn't pulled that one out in ages. It's got that same rhythm machine that Sly used on Riot, I'm sure of it. Listen to the beginning of "Call me the Breeze," that sound is unmistakable.

Here is a show full of Swedish psychedelic music from the sixties and seventies, and a little from beyond. Anyone unfamiliar with the Lord of the Rings record by BO HANSSON should check it out. You've probably flipped past in while you were digging through used records one time or another. Fans of imaginative, melodic, and evocative instrumental rock should pay attention. Great Sunday afternoon chill music. Bo passed away just a few days before this show aired. I've been a big fan ever since hearing the song "The Black Riders" in the Swedish indie film "Tilsammas" (Together). A lot more weird and obscure and brilliant Swedes to top it off, as well. The Programmer's Archive is running a little behind. I am also running a little behind. So, Steve Ruffin had to take back his Wednesday nights, which is totally understandable and fair, so I'm back to doing the show solo. Fine with me. Looking forward to this summer on the air. I actually got to the studio before him that night, and the guy who does the Blue Plate Special had to get going, so I started the show with a couple of songs. Steve had to sit out this week due to his commitments to ragtag and the true/false film festival that occurred this week/weekend in Columbia. I thought I was going to have to try and raise more money for the station and then learned that we met and exceeded the pledge drive goal for this season, so it left me feeling a little sheepish. Cooper showed up during the second hour and we were digging through the reggae records and the african records, as well. A few things didn't make it to the playlist (like the incredible "palm wine seller" which we found a pristine copy of in the stacks) but WHATEVER. You can figure it out. Love to all.

We didn't play any Robbie Basho (really wanted to play something off of Venus in Cancer, but the KOPN copy seems to be missing, @Keith Wood ;). But I still think this is a solid show and that fans and friends of Jacks will appreciate it. We got a few phone calls, which was really nice, except for the one from the crazy Army recruiter who just wanted to hear his PSA. That was kind of lame.

I had a vision of an epic prog monument to beauty, but this show is pretty goo, too.
This one gets off to a very rocky start (didn't mean to play two songs in a row off that comp and then really goof up the Soft Machine song's entrance) but hits a nice stride. Once fellow KOPN radio personality Kyle (lead singer of the Tyrds) shows up with his tall dark and silent friend and requests "Blister on the Moon" by Taste, I knew that this show had achieved a rare singular beauty. So maybe I wasn't wrong about that prog monument after all?

I was hanging out with Pat Kopine before his midnight shift at KOPN one friday night and I decided that I really REALLY felt like getting on the air with him that night.
Pat doesn't enter his playlist into the database that we use, so I haven't got it here in front of me. I do remeber that we wrote everything down, though. I had to drive to Chicago the next morning (went to the Permanent Records birthday party at the Hideout in Chicago) so I'm only on the first two hours, but the third hour of solo Pat is a keeper, too.
We start this show with Times New Viking's "Move to California." We played some more recent indie/underground punk and psych, I remember playing "Emotional Rescue" and "Jive Talking" back-to-back, I think...definitely played a few Axemen songs...I don't know. If you're a friend of mine and/or a friend of Pat's, you will like this.

Been waiting a week for this one to get upped to the programming archive so I could share it with you all. Steve and I hit a nice synchronicity with this show, I believe. Saw the Meat Puppets in CoMo this week, they were excellent. Took them a little while to warm up (the weird rocked up version of "Oh Me" that they opened with made me itchy) but once they jammed out the end of "Up On The Sun" (which they extended to like 8 minutes long) everything was rolling in stride. When they ripped into "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" I was howling at the yellow moon right along with em.

Steve brought a nice portable numark that plays 78's last night. I feel like we really hit the right formula with the show.
